MC Serch is a 59-year-old MC, songwriter, and record executive from Queens, New York, who rose to prominence as one-third of the legendary group 3rd Bass. Following the group’s disbandment, he released his solo debut, Return of the Product, under Def Jam Recordings—a project notable for featuring one of the very first guest appearances from Nas. It has been over three decades since that release, and to the surprise of many, Serch has returned with Millions of Zeroes, a new EP fully produced by Apathy, a veteran of the Army of the Pharaohs and Demigodz collectives.
The project opens with “Thanks Serch,” a groovy instrumental that serves as a reflection on the connections he has made throughout his illustrious career. This is followed by “The Builder,” a track that highlights his success over a funky, driving beat. The EP also features “Air It Out” with NEMS, a playful club anthem that showcases the chemistry between the two artists. As the project progresses, “Questions in My Mind” addresses the inevitable inquiries regarding his longevity in the industry, while the penultimate track, “The Playbook,” delivers a dose of soulful, mature hip-hop.
While Return of the Product remains a significant piece of Def Jam history, it is not necessarily the most celebrated work of the early 90s, despite containing standout tracks like “Back to the Grill” and “Scenes from the Mind.” However, Millions of Zeroes manages to surpass that debut by offering a newfound creative urgency. Supported by a consistent, high-quality production suite from Apathy, MC Serch approaches these tracks with a sense of reflective honesty that feels both timely and earned.
