YNW Melly has reportedly been denied an early jail release despite his positive coronavirus diagnosis.
On Tuesday (April 14), TMZ reports that Melly's request to get out of Broward County Jail has been denied.
According to documents obtained by XXL, an attorney for the Florida rapper filed an emergency motion for release for medical care on April 6. News that Melly had contracted the virus was announced on April 2.
Shortly after the emergency motion was made on YNW Melly's behalf, the families of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser filed documents opposing Melly's early release. The documents filed by the attorney representing Juvy's family states that "the premise of any "release" causes extreme distress to the victims and their family." TMZ reports that YNW Sakchaser's family agrees, saying that YNW Melly does not deserve to be released.
YNW Melly's attorney, Bradford Cohen, confirmed to XXL on April 9 that the motion filed for the rapper is for medical care. He added that the hospital is "equipped to deal with COVID-19 until he recovers."
Melly has been behind bars since he turned himself in to Miramar, Fla. police on Feb. 13, 2019 after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser. Authorities accused YNW Melly and his associate, YNW Bortlen, of staging the shooting to make it appear to be a drive-by.
Just before turning himself in, Melly shared a message with his fans on Instagram. "To all my fans and supporters no I did not get locked up in Washington , but I am turning myself in today I want you guys to know I love you and appreciate every single one of y’all, a couple months ago I lost my two brothers by violence and now the system want to find justice," he wrote at the time. "[Unfortunately] a lot of rumors and lies are being said but no worries god is with me and my brother @ynw.bortlen and we want y’all to remember it’s a ynw Family I love you @ynwsakchaser1 and @ynwjuvy #freeus."
