This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 2016 2016 XXL Freshman Class, a group widely regarded as one of the most influential collectives in hip-hop history. The class served as a pivotal moment for the culture, introducing the world to ten distinct voices: 21 Savage, Anderson .Paak, Lil Uzi Vert, Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Denzel Curry, Desiigner, G Herbo, Dave East, and Lil Dicky.
In a reflective conversation, G Herbo looks back on the rapid passage of time. “When I look back at it, it has seemed like it hasn’t been 10 years, for real,” he notes. “Ten years is so long, but in this industry, in the business, it goes by like this.”
A Unique Era in Hip-Hop
For Herbo, the 2016 class represented a unique intersection of sounds and styles. As a leader of the Chicago drill movement, he brought a gritty, authentic perspective that helped define the era. He views his inclusion in the class as a matter of “divine timing,” noting that the period between 2015 and 2017 remains some of the most significant years for his generation of hip-hop.
Rather than chasing fleeting trends, Herbo remained committed to his craft, focusing on the storytelling that had earned him his reputation. “You know music kinda change every few years,” he explains. “Not focused on making melodic records or focused on trying to make hit records. Just rap and do you. People are going to appreciate it.”

Today, his definition of success has shifted from mere chart performance to personal fulfillment and longevity. “Success is being able to do what I love, but to do it on my own pace, on my own terms,” he shares. “Balance fatherhood, I’m about to get married, and still being able to navigate through the industry and still have success at this level.”
