MC Serch is a 59-year-old MC, songwriter, and record executive from Queens, New York, who rose to prominence as one-third of the legendary group 3rd Bass. Following the group’s disbandment, he released his solo LP Return of the Product under Def Jam Recordings, a project notable for featuring one of the very first guest appearances from Nas. It has been over three decades since that release, and to the surprise of many, he has returned with a new extended play, Millions of Zeros, featuring full production from Apathy, a veteran of the Army of the Pharaohs and Demigodz collectives.
The EP opens with “Thanks Serch,” a track defined by a groovy instrumental that serves as a reflection on the relationships and experiences he has cultivated throughout his illustrious career. This is followed by “The Builder,” where he leans into a funky beat to boast about his professional success. The project also features “Air It Out,” a collaboration with NEMS that functions as a playful club anthem, while “Questions in My Mind” addresses the inevitable inquiries regarding his longevity in the industry. The project concludes with “The Playbook,” a track that delivers a soulful, mature sound before the final outro.
While Return of the Product remains a significant piece of early 90s Def Jam history—boasting standout tracks like “Back to the Grill” and “Scenes from the Mind”—Millions of Zeros arguably surpasses it in terms of cohesion. By pairing MC Serch with the consistent, gritty production style of Apathy, the EP captures a newfound creative urgency. The project approaches its subject matter from a place of reflective honesty, proving that Serch still has plenty to offer the culture.
