J.I.D has made his feelings clear regarding the 2026 BET Awards, taking to social media to express his frustration after being left out of this year’s nomination list. Following the announcement of the nominees on Tuesday (May 19), the Atlanta rapper did not mince words, posting a blunt message on X: “I hate BET.”

The situation escalated when a fan attempted to console the rapper by quoting lyrics from J. Cole‘s “99 Build Freestyle,” which suggested that if hip-hop were truly in a healthy state, J.I.D would be charting platinum. The fan’s attempt to highlight J.I.D’s lyrical prowess backfired, as J.I.D took issue with the sentiment, responding, “Ni**a ain’t say sh*t. I been overly platinum that bar was a*s.”

For J.I.D, the lack of recognition from the network is particularly stinging, as securing a BET Award has long been a professional goal. In his 2025 XXL cover story, the rapper spoke candidly about his desire to be acknowledged by the institution that shaped his early appreciation for the genre. “I just want one off of the nostalgia of watching BET,” he explained at the time. “That was the birth of my love for hip-hop, BET and all those type of stations. That would be cool. I just want a little nom. I ain’t never got one yet. Tap in, BET. F**k with your boy.”

He further highlighted the discrepancy between his critical and commercial success compared to his awards cabinet, noting, “I got three Grammy noms and no BET awards. What are we doing? What’s up, Black people?” Since that interview, J.I.D has continued to build his resume, earning two additional Grammy nominations, yet the BET recognition remains elusive.

The rapper’s candid reaction serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between artists and the award shows that define mainstream success in hip-hop. As of now, J.I.D has deleted the controversial tweets, but the conversation surrounding his exclusion continues to resonate with his fanbase.
