YG is currently preparing for the release of his highly anticipated new album, The Gentlemen’s Club, which marks his first major project in six years. As he reflects on the lengthy hiatus, the Compton rapper revealed that he has been guided by the wisdom of Kendrick Lamar, specifically regarding the pitfalls of rushing music to satisfy contractual obligations.
In a candid video conversation with DJ Hed, which premiered on YouTube on June 4, 2026, YG opened up about the creative process behind his upcoming work. He admitted that there was a period in his career when his primary motivation for dropping projects was to fulfill his requirements and exit his deal with Def Jam. However, after playing his new material for Kendrick, the Pulitzer Prize-winning artist offered a piece of advice that changed his trajectory.
“I was talking to Dot, I’m playing him the album and sh*t… I’m telling him about what I was doing, like putting out albums just to get out the deal ’cause my deal was f**ked up,” he explained. “He (Kendrick) was like, ‘Bro, you ain’t never supposed to do that. You gotta give it your all every time.'”
Taking this guidance to heart, YG has pivoted toward a more intentional approach. He describes The Gentlemen’s Club as a concept-driven project, deeply rooted in authentic storytelling and personal perspective. The 4Hunnid leader is aiming for a release that commands respect and critical acclaim, rather than one simply designed to meet a quota.
With his seventh studio album, The Gentlemen’s Club, set to arrive on all digital streaming platforms on June 19, fans are eager to see how this renewed focus on quality translates into his latest body of work.
