Easton, Pennsylvania emcee Godilla has officially returned to the scene, enlisting producer Native Born to craft his second extended play and his debut release under the Omega Level Records banner. Godilla’s career, which saw him team up with Eff Yoo in 2014 for the collaborative effort They Came on Horseback, includes notable projects like his full-length debut The Altered Beast, the 2017 release Battlebeast: A Prelude to Human Zoo, and his last EP, Cerveza. Nearly a decade later, he is back with Prismas Electricos.
The project opens with the “Channel Surfing” intro, leading directly into “??What’s This??,” a rugged 90-second track defined by sharp, hardcore penmanship. The EP continues with “88MPH,” which serves as a nostalgic homage to the golden era of hip-hop. “Bubble Letter Glyphs” utilizes a soulful piano flip to pay tribute to the art of writing, while the “Class of ‘96” interlude bridges the gap into the second half of the project, highlighted by the aggressive “Starscream’s Ghost.”
Prismas Electricos features select guest appearances from Mr. Misk and Tone Liv on “Terror Ink,” where they deliver cutthroat verses over a gritty, atmospheric boom-bap instrumental. The project maintains its momentum with “Metal Sunset,” a track capturing the transition of the evening, and concludes with “Blind Focus,” a poignant reflection on the merits of independent artistry versus major label constraints.
By channeling the spirit of hip-hop’s past through a modern lens, Godilla’s latest work surpasses his 2017 output. He effectively utilizes layered audio textures to evoke emotion and memory, drawing a parallel to the abstract art of Sonia Delaunay. Native Born’s production is the perfect companion, blending warm samples with crisp percussion and maintaining a focused, intimate guest list that allows Godilla’s lyricism to take center stage.
