Brooklyn, New York veteran AZ has returned with his 11th studio LP, Doe or Die III, which also serves as his official debut on Mass Appeal Records. Known for his pivotal role in hip-hop history—most notably as the sole feature on Nas’ iconic debut Illmatic—AZ has maintained a storied career that includes classics like Pieces of a Man, Aziatic, and A.W.O.L. With the support of a new distribution deal between Quiet Money Records and Mass Appeal, this project aims to provide a definitive conclusion to one of the genre’s most celebrated mafioso trilogies.

A Return to Form

The album opens with the “Origin” intro, quickly transitioning into the boom-bap energy of “No Need for Lactose,” produced by Ron Browz. The track sets a gritty tone, with AZ paying homage to his roots and those currently incarcerated. The momentum continues with “Gimme the World,” featuring Jadakiss, which showcases a sharp, demanding flow over a Large Professor instrumental. The project also features the reflective single “So High” and the introspective “Uniqueness,” produced by Mike & Keys.

Completing the Trilogy

The second half of the album kicks off with “Still Jackie,” a sequel to the classic “Ho Happy Jackie” from the original Doe or Die, featuring an exuberant production from Statik Selektah. A major highlight for long-time fans is the reunion with Nas on the track “Surprise,” where the two trade bars over a soulful Mike & Keys beat, revisiting the mafioso themes that defined their early careers. The project is rounded out by the Buckwild-produced “Winners Win” and the reflective closing track “Love My Life.”

Doe or Die III stands as a testament to AZ’s longevity. By blending cinematically polished boom-bap production with his signature intricate storytelling, he has successfully revitalized his career and provided a satisfying end to a trilogy that began three decades ago.
