Ghanan emcee Recognize Ali has returned with his 20th solo LP, Mantequilla, marking his second major release of 2026. Over the last decade, he has cemented himself as a dominant force in the underground hip-hop scene, building a massive discography of LPs, mixtapes, and EPs. His ability to deliver stellar feature performances has only bolstered his reputation, with standout projects like the Giallo Point-produced Back 2 Mecca, the Stu Bangas-helmed Guerrilla Dynasty trilogy, and the Bronze Nazareth-produced Season of the Se7en serving as benchmarks for his lyrical prowess.
Following the success of Back to M3cca and the DJ D-Styles-produced All Shall Perish, Recognize Ali has opted for a full-length collaboration with Giallo Point for Mantequilla. The result is a project that feels both familiar and refreshingly sharp.
The album opens with “Risky Business,” an aggressive boom-bap track that sets the tone by detailing the artist’s volatile tendencies. This intensity continues through “Russian Roulette with a Loaded Tech,” where the focus shifts to his unwavering commitment to his craft. Tracks like “Criminal Kind (Violent by Design)” showcase a cinematically raw production style that perfectly complements his storytelling, while “Defy Death” serves as a menacing warning to any challengers.
While Tru Trilla’s appearance on “Danger Zone” provides a cautionary tone, the project truly shines during the drumless title track, which utilizes a skit to hypnotize the listener with a relentless, maddening flow. Other highlights include “Mic’s I Smoke,” which emphasizes his technical proficiency, and “A King’s Ladder,” which pairs a sharp piano flip with aggressive imagery. The album concludes with “Meet Your Maker,” an enjoyably jazzy outro that rounds out the experience.
Both albums released by Recognize Ali this year have been strong, but Mantequilla stands out due to the undeniable chemistry between him and Giallo Point. While the guest features may not resonate with every listener, the raw, unfiltered flavor delivered by the Greenfield Music founder and his UK-based producer remains a high point for the genre.
