Detroit, Michigan emcee Valid has returned with a surprise-dropping his 2nd mixtape, The Bronko Tape 2. Having introduced himself to the scene over a decade ago with Reach High, he followed up in 2019 with the deeply personal sophomore effort Mihajlo—a project I personally recommend as the definitive starting point for any new listener—before releasing the Plum Brandy EP just nine months later. Following the success of The Bronko Tape and Peach Brandy, he is now preluding the next chapter of his career with this highly anticipated sequel.
The project opens with “See It Twice,” which glides over a synth-driven boom-bap beat crafted by Pig Pen, featuring Valid reflecting on the rap game’s impact on his life. This is followed by “Gitchya Money,” produced by Big Tone, which serves as a funky, two-and-a-half-minute ode to the hustle. The atmosphere shifts with “Riverwalk,” which embraces a smoother, spacier instrumental vibe, while “Debt Free” poses a poignant question to the world regarding the luxury of living without financial burdens.
The mid-section of the tape features a diverse array of collaborations. Huey 11 brings a seductive energy to “Champaign Knights” over a Simple Cuts production, leading into “Once in a Blue,” which features Kool Keith. The track “Live My Life,” featuring eLZhi and Mikri Maus, addresses the envy surrounding the trio’s lifestyle, while “Matter of Respect,” featuring Jon Connor, serves as a high-energy tribute to tag-team wrestling legends.
As the project enters its final quarter, “The Town” utilizes kicks, snares, and vibraphone to paint a vivid picture of the Motor City. “Burying You” highlights the production ear of Peace of Mind, providing a gritty backdrop for a narrative-heavy track. “Pašteta,” featuring Noti Limun, offers a heartfelt nod to Valid’s Balkan heritage, while “Passing Down” serves as a cautionary tale about the personal costs of success.
Ultimately, The Bronko Tape 2 succeeds by returning to the core elements that made the original tape such an exciting listen three years ago. As Valid prepares for an upcoming European tour, the project continues to draw parallels between his own career trajectory and that of the legendary Bronko Lubich, whose own Serbian background and behind-the-scenes reputation remain a central theme in Valid’s artistic narrative.
