Fugees rapper Pras Michel has officially surrendered to federal authorities, marking the beginning of a 14-year prison sentence. The artist turned himself in on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Ariz., following his high-profile 2023 conviction on multiple federal charges.

The legal proceedings, which concluded with a conviction on 10 federal counts—including money laundering, illegal foreign lobbying, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and witness tampering—have reached a somber milestone. A spokesperson for the rapper, Erica Dumas, issued a statement following his surrender, noting that while the legal team continues to contest the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) charges on appeal, the artist remains committed to honoring the judicial process.

Legal Challenges and Future Appeals

“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice,” Dumas stated. “His legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult but it is not his final one.”

The sentencing, which was handed down in a Washington D.C. federal court in November 2025, also includes a three-year term of supervised probation following his release. Furthermore, the court has ordered the forfeiture of $64 million, which prosecutors allege was linked to the illicit schemes.

The Scope of the Conspiracy

The case centered on a complex international conspiracy involving billionaire financier Jho Low, who is accused of embezzling billions from the 1MDB Malaysian development fund. Prosecutors successfully argued that Michel acted on behalf of Low to illegally lobby the U.S. government. Additionally, the rapper was implicated in a scandal involving the 2012 re-election campaign of former President Barack Obama, where he was accused of facilitating illegal foreign and conduit campaign contributions.

Despite the gravity of his legal situation, Michel has remained active in the public eye until his surrender. He was recently spotted at a concert in Los Angeles featuring Ye and his former Fugees bandmate Lauryn Hill. Furthermore, in March 2026, Michel moved to drop a lawsuit he had previously filed against Hill, in which he alleged that she had exploited his legal troubles to pressure him into a reunion tour.
