Nearly four and a half years after his debut, Belleville, Michigan emcee Kain Cole has returned to prove that his artistic evolution is far from over. Following an eight-year period of incarceration, Cole found his footing with the Detroit independent powerhouse Middle Finger Music. His latest project, Khronicles of Kain, marks a significant step forward, reuniting him with label co-founder and producer Foul Mouth, who also helmed his 2022 debut, S.U.M.P. (Surviving Under Major Pressure).
The album opens with the soulfully jazzy “Gotta Have It,” a track that sets a reflective tone by acknowledging both past and present detractors. As the project progresses, Cole demonstrates a refined approach to songwriting. Tracks like “It’s Up to You” lean into motivational themes, while “Heavyweight” and “I.Y.K.Y.K. (If You Know You Know)” showcase his ability to navigate gritty, boom-bap instrumentals with the same precision he possessed before his time away.
The mid-section of the album highlights the versatility of the production. On “Uno,” Cole flows over a blend of strings and sharp percussion, while “Blue Check” utilizes soul samples to critique the transactional nature of modern success. “Foolish” leans into a classic chipmunk soul aesthetic, providing a backdrop for Cole’s candid admissions about the difficulty of personal change.
The second half of the LP maintains this momentum. “Bebe’s Kid” reinforces Cole’s commitment to authenticity, while “We Get It In,” featuring Bang Belushi, serves as a high-energy display of lyrical prowess. The project concludes with “How Did I Survive?,” a poignant look at the artist’s journey through the hardships he has witnessed.
Ultimately, Khronicles of Kain stands as a testament to growth. Foul Mouth’s production—which shifts seamlessly between drumless, boom-bap, jazz rap, and soul—provides the perfect canvas for Cole’s introspective bars. It is a compelling sophomore effort that justifies the anticipation surrounding his return.
